Joseph Alleine
(1634–1668)
Joseph Alleine
Joseph Alleine was an English non-conformist preacher, born in 1634. He graduated from Oxford in 1653 and became the chaplain of his college, Corpus Christi. In 1655, he became assistant minister at Taunton, but was ejected for non-conformity in 1662.
He continued to preach and was twice imprisoned because of his non-conformity. His imprisonment, some believe, contributed to his early death at the age of 34. He was troubled in his later years by the constant danger of arrest. A learned man who engaged in scientific study, he is now remembered as the author of An Alarm to Unconverted Sinners. He published several other works, including an Explanation of the Assembly’s Shorter Catechism.
